Hurrication

There has been so much devastation and destruction with Hurricane Ike, and we truly count our blessings that our home was spared. I don't want to make light of any of it. Our hearts go out to Galveston and the surrounding areas. It's going to be a very long clean up and rebuilding period. Please keep them in your prayers.

Now, The Davis 4 and Hurricane Ike backstory....

First you have to get the Hurricane lingo. So here are some of the terms you'll need to know:

Hurrication: Days taken off from work, school, and/or normal daily routine due to brute force hurricane winds, rain, storm surge, and power outages. And no, you can't relax and enjoy it.

Gas: Liquid gold

Ice: Solid gold (without the dancers)

Generator: The next best thing to electricity /$500-600 pre-hurricane, $1500 day after hurricane. May cause deafness.

Zip Code: How we are identified. You evacuate by zip code and your power gets restored by zip code.

POD: Point Of Distribution - site providing ice, non perishable foods, MREs, and water/ friend's house trying to cook all their meat before it goes bad.

MREs: Meals Ready To Eat

Gas Water Heater: Hot showers, granted it's hot yellow water, but it's still hot.

"When do you think we'll get power back?" : Hi, how are you today?

"Hunker Down": Mayor Bill White's way of saying, don't evacuate if you don't live on the coast, because nobody wants a repeat of the Hurricane Rita evacuation traffic nightmare.

"Write your name and social security number on your forearm.." : For heaven's sake, get out of Dodge.

FEMA: A Hurricane staple. There was lots of "miscommunication" between gov't officials and FEMA after Ike.
